キング牧師の功績・生涯・エピソード

【法律上の黒人差別を撤廃する】
宗教改革を行ったマルティン・ルターから「マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア」と父親が命名。6歳の時にはじめて差別体験をうける。
マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニアが牧師をしていた26歳のとき、白人にバスの席を譲らなかった黒人女性が逮捕される事件が起きた。かねてガンディーに啓発されていたキング牧師は、非暴力で逮捕に抗議。バス・ボイコット運動を指導し、連邦最高裁判所から人種分離法違憲判決を勝ち取った。以後、全米各地で黒人の公民権運動を開始した。「ワシントン大行進」デモでは、リンカーン記念堂前で「I Have a Dream（私には夢がある）」で始まる演説を行った。

【キング牧師の功績】
1964年、新公民権法が成立し、法の上での人種差別は終わりを告げた。同年キングはノーベル平和賞を受賞。
その後は、ベトナム反戦運動を始めたが、1969年、テネシー州メンフィスでの遊説中、市内のロレイン・モーテルの306号室前のルコニーで打ち合わせ中に、白人男性に射殺された。39歳だった。
穏健派のキング牧師は、同時期の黒人解放運動で過激派のマルコムXとは激しい隔絶があったが、キングとの会談を持とうとしていた矢先にマルコムXも暗殺されてしまった。
キング牧師は、アメリカの黒人差別問題の歴史上、もっとも重要な人物のひとりである。
