マキャヴェリの功績・生涯・エピソード

【外交官の経験を生かし「君主論」を著す】
フィレンツェの中流貴族出身のマキャヴェリは、イタリア・ルネサンス最盛期に青春時代を過ごした。だが彼が25歳の時、芸術家たちのパトロンだったメディチ家が市から追放された。そして享楽に走る風潮を厳しく批判した修道士サヴォナローラが神権政治を始めた。市の書記局に勤務したマキャヴェリは、外交使節となり、諸外国国王やローマ教皇らとの外交交渉を行った。
しかしメディチ家政権が復活すると、マキャヴェリは郊外へ追放される。ここで著作生活に入り、書き上げたのが著名な「君主論」である。外交使節時代の経験をふまえ、イタリアの統一を最優先課題とし、「国家には、宗教や道徳とは無関係に、獅子の勇猛さと狐の狡智を兼ね備えた君主が必要」と主張した。
政治目的実現のためには手段を選ばないことを「マキャヴェリズム」というが、実際の「君主論」には独立国家のあり方、君主の権力や軍備などについて述べた著作であり、自国民による軍隊整備の重要性を主張している。
マキャヴェリは、1516年にロレンツォ・デ・メディチに謁見し、その場で献上したのが「君主論」である。
