【新大陸への新たな扉をあけたコロンブスの言葉を理解するために】
・スペインの女王イサベルの援助を得て西廻りでアジアへ行こうとした。
・カリブ海の西インド諸島に1492年到着。アジアと信じ続けた。
・航海は合計4回。植民地経営に手を出すが失敗。

【コロンブスの性格】
並々ならぬ情熱ととるか、思い込みの激しさととるか。コロンブスの人物評はさまざまあるが、特に多いものとして「思い込みがめちゃくちゃ激しい」というものだ。その激しさからドンキホーテと重ね合わされることもある。

【間違った情報をもとに航海へ出発してしまう】
15世紀では航海は命がけの大冒険。大西洋を横断してアジアに行こうとするのは、並みの信念や確証では難しい。ヨーロッパ以外の地理がまだほとんどわかってないので他の冒険家が二の足をふむなか、マルコポーロの「世界の記述」にある「黄金の国ジパング」に魅了され冒険航海への意思をかためていく。他に拠り所としていた情報としてフランスの神学者ピエール ダイイの「イマゴ＝ムンディ」イタリアの地理学者トスカネリの情報がある。いずれもスペインからアジアまでの距離が過小評価されていたため、ヨーロッパから中国までの距離を実際の三分の一にあたる6000Km前後と見積もっていた。そうして運良くカリブ海の島にたどりついたコロンブスだが彼自身は死ぬまでそこがアジアの一部だと思い込んでいた。
