哲学者ディオゲネスは、人が幸福であるためには恥や欲といった自然に反するものに従ってはならないという考えから自ら大きな樽の中に済み、野良犬のような生活を送っていた。あるとき日光浴をしていている最中にアレクサンドロス大王の訪問をうけた。「何かのぞみがあれば申してみよ」という大王の問いかけにディオゲネスは「日陰になるからそこをどいてくれ」と答えた。アレクサンドロスはこれを聞いて起こることはなく「私はアレクサンドロスでなければディオゲネスでありたい」とこたえた。
